We Cannot Force Someone

One of the hardest lessons in life is accepting that we cannot make somebody else change. We can give advice. We can explain what we believe they should do. We can encourage them, support them and even show them a different way of looking at their situation. But ultimately, the decision to change has to belong to them.

Trying to force somebody to do something that isn't right for them rarely produces the result we want. It can create resistance, frustration and resentment, even when our intentions are good. That doesn't mean we should stand back and do nothing. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is plant a seed.

A conversation. An idea. A question. A different perspective. Something that gives another person the opportunity to think differently when they are ready. The seed may take days, months or even years to grow. We may never see what comes from it. That can be difficult because we naturally want to see the people we care about make better choices, but their journey is theirs.

Positive thinking isn't about controlling other people. It is about understanding what we can control: our own thoughts, choices, behaviour and response to what happens around us. We can be there without taking over. We can encourage without demanding. We can offer support without trying to live somebody else's life for them.

And sometimes, letting go of the need to make someone change is an act of love in itself. We cannot force someone to do what is right for them. But we can plant a seed, give it room to grow and be there when they are ready.
